In Kerala, the State government’s Public Works Department has been entrusted the maintenance of
Murikkumpadaom-Belbo University Raod at Elamkunnapuzha, near Kochi. The State government took the decision by taking the failure of the local authorities to maintain the road. Even the State Human Rights Commission had complained in this regard. The PWD has estimated the cost of restoration of the road at Rs 1 crore.
Murikkumpadom Sneha Deepom ResidentsÂ’ Association had submitted a petition to the State Human Rights Commission regarding the poor maintenance of the road. According to the complaint, the road, which was constructed in marshy land, had become damaged beyond repair.
Oil tankers of the Bharat Petroleum use the route extensively but it had not repaired the road. A container yard by a private party was also constructed along the route. In the petition, the complainant said that Elamkunnapuzha panchayat was not willing to repair the road. Hence the Human Rights Commission had sought a report from the PWD demanding why they had not intervened in the road construction.
