In a development that may increase output from Reliance Industries’ (RIL) KG D6 basin, the company said it discovered another reservoir of natural gas below its existing fields in the basin.

Although the company could not ascertain the potential output at the reservoir as it is still drilling in the region, some reports indicate that the new reserve could be significant.

RIL would test the gas flow and assess the commercial viability after it completes drilling in the new reservoir. After that, it needs the directorate general of hydrocarbons to endorse the viability or “declaration of commerciality” of the new discovery.

According to a spokesman of the company, drilling of MJ 1 is still underway and it is too speculative to comment on the results of the well. The company has to carry out several operations, including completing the drilling, logging and testing, he said. At this stage, therefore, RIL does not want to comment anything on speculations, the spokesman said.

The company started drilling well after the government gave permission to explore further in the block, where its D1 and D3 fields are producing natural gas.

The company and its partner, BP, have reviewed the geology of the reservoir to prepare a new strategy for exploiting its hydrocarbons potential effectively.
