Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990 batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS)’s Rajasthan cadre has assumed charge as Chairman & Managing Director, the Navratna non-financial banking company (NBFC) REC Ltd with effect from November 9. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) had approved Malhotra’s appointment.
Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, Director (Technical), REC Ltd was hitherto holding the additional charge of the post of CMD since June.
Before his joining as Chairman & Managing Director of REC, Malhotra was posted as an additional secretary in the Ministry of Power. He is an engineering graduate in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, and has a master’s in public policy from Princeton University. With demonstrated leadership skills and an excellent track record in his 30-year career, Malhotra has worked in multifarious sectors including energy, information technology, mines & minerals, finance, agriculture, health, etc.
He has extensive experience in the Indian power sector both at the state as well as the central level. As Principal Secretary, in-charge of the Energy Department in Rajasthan, he spearheaded many initiatives including the appointment of distribution franchisees in four towns, the introduction of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in transmission and innovations in metering, billing and collection. As an additional secretary in the Ministry of Power, he was looking after transmission, distribution, reforms and restructuring of the distribution utilities of union territories.
