Completing these five vessels will boost Indian‑flag tonnage, expand offshore capability, and create maritime jobs, advancing India’s vision of indigenous and self-reliant shipbuilding.
India’s largest shipyard, Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd (SDHI), will complete five offshore support vessels (OSVs) for Kakinada‑based San Maritime India Pvt. Ltd. San Maritime has begun docking the vessels at SDHI’s Pipavav shipyard for completion under Indian Register of Shipping (IR Class) certification, subsequently catering to the growing demands of the offshore industry, SDHI said in a statement on Tuesday.
The completion of these five OSVs will strengthen Indian‑flag tonnage, enhance offshore capability, and generate maritime jobs, reinforcing India’s vision of expanding indigenous, self‑reliant shipbuilding through targeted financial assistance and incentive schemes. The project will also support local vendors and service providers across the shipbuilding ecosystem.
SDHI acquired the hulls as part of Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd’s (RNEL) corporate insolvency resolution process under the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). San Maritime subsequently acquired the hulls from SDHI. While construction originally began under the previous management, the revived shipyard will now complete the vessels, reinforcing operational readiness and executional capability under new leadership.
Located on India’s western coast, SDHI offers unmatched shipbuilding infrastructure, including the country’s largest dry dock (662 m x 65 m), wet basin (340 m x 60 m), and a 1.2 km dedicated waterfront for berthing, docking, and launching of vessels.
