SPS Shipping is taking efforts to secure the contract to transport coal through inland waterways for NTPCÂ’s Barh-II thermal power plant project in Patna.
The company is holding discussion with the public sector power major in this regard transport 3 million tonne of coal from Sandheads (mouth of the Hooghly river) along Inland Waterways 1 to the project destination.
If SPS manages to secure the contract, it will have to build a trans-loading facility at the sandhead, acquire barges, and build a jetty for offloading the coal. The firm has started working on detailed study on the project.
Earlier, NTPC asked Inland Waterways Authority of India to ensure transportation of imported coal to its plants. Following this, IWAI invited bids (expression of interests) for transportation for the to the Bar-II project.
NTPC plans to operationalise the two 660 mw units of Barh-II thermal power station in Bihar in the second half of this year.
Jindal ITF — a fully owned subsidiary of Jindal Saw — has bagged a contract for transportation 3-8 mn t imported coal through inland waterway to NTPC’s Farakka plants.
