Data from the World Steel Association (WSA) shows that steel output in India contracted a marginal 0.5 per cent to 6.2 million tonne (mn t) in February from 6.229 mn t in the year-ago month.

During the same month, global steel production expanded 1.2 per cent to 123 mn t. The US produced 6.7 mn t steel in February 2013, down 11.8 per cent over the same month last year.

During February 2013, China produced 61.8 mn t, which is 9.8 per cent higher over the same month last year.

Japan produced 8.3 mn t steel, while South Korea’s output stood at 5 mn t. Among the European Union nations, Germany produced 3.4 mn t, Italy 2.1 mn t, France 1.3 mn t and Spain 1.2 mn t in February.

Brazil produced 2.6 mn t of the metal, 6.2 per cent lower than output in the same month last year.

The crude steel capacity utilisation ratio in February 2013 rose to 80.5 per cent from 76.7 per cent in January 2013. Compared to February 2012, it is 0.8 percentage point lower.
