Sujoy Ghosh, Country Head, First Solar India
The biggest challenge for the head of a global-leader solar EPC contractor comÂpany is not merely to settle it down in new environs, but to join the tough batÂtle to bring down costs and make grid parity (where the cost of producing solar is equivalent to that by other resources) a reality for this high-priority form of energy.
For Ghosh, this can happen when his company can span the develÂopment-construction cycle and make O&M a substantial activity. With his nine years’ experience at GE energy, where he was in charge of power generation businesses, the domain is not new to Ghosh. Neither is kick-starting a business—indeed, he says that’s something he has enjoyed the most when he’s not watching his favourite sport, soccer.
Since he joined First Solar in April, he hopes to “lead the build out of the company’s business platform in India across the solar energy value chain and to provide for the most cost effective solar energy deployment on the grid in a sustainable mannerâ€. This, he believes, should help First Solar wedge out a fair share of the market.
Ghosh is aware of the estimated time for the industry to achieve grid parity—2015—based on the growth and volumes of solar power in the country. Once this wall is breached, Ghosh says there is no looking back for the solar industry. He hopes the government considers making power a priority sector soon, providing a quantum leap to infrastructure.
