Government generates Rs 1,748 crore from auction of 31 coal mines
The government has generated revenue of Rs 17,47.70 crore from the auction of 31 coal blocks.
“The revenue generated till January, 2017 from the auction of 31 coal mines is Rs 17,47,72,47,706,” Coal and Power Minister Piyush Goyal said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

India will auction another eight coal blocks to private steel, cement and electricity companies in January, coal secretary Anil Swarup said, as it races to more than double output to 1.5 billion tonne.

Govt invokes Electricity Act

The current legislative framework in relation to eligibility with respect to coal mining in India is the Coal Mines (Nationalization) Act, 1973 (´CMN Act´). Under the CMN Act, nationalization of coal mines was completed in two phases.
India is not short of coal
My initial focus is totally on the follow-up on the Supreme Court decision. The SC had cancelled the 204 blocks and we are now attempting through a legislation to see that at least in those 42 blocks where the SC had given time till 31st March, we have somebody in position to take over those mines.

The government is likely to issue at least a dozen sets of rules before starting the e-auction of coal blocks.
