Large-scale opencast projects have been identified by Coal India Ltd for achieving its 1 billion tonne target by FY 2020. CIL has planned to upgrade its coal mining technology to meet its objective. Use of surface miners, high wall miners, etc., will require skilled manpower for optimum utilisation and supervision of these heavy earth moving machinery (HEMM).

Coal India Q3 profit down 16.2% to Rs.3,262.49 crore
Coal India LtdĆĀ“s net profit in the quarter ended 31 December declined 16.2 per cent to Rs 3,262.49 crore compared with the year-ago period as the national miner sold less coal through electronic auctions in order to meet domestic power sector demand as directed by the Coal Ministry.
CIL’s April production at 37.5 mt
Coal India Ltd (CIL) produced 37.5 million tonne of coal in April, as against the target of 37.6 mt. The company's offtake was 40.54 mt during the month, against a target of 45.17 mt.
Coal India power plant
Coal India Ltd plans to set up a 1.6 GW power plant by 2015/16 near one of its mines from which coal cannot be shipped and sold due to a lack of rail connections. Insufficient connectivity is one of the reasons the company has lagged output targets for more than six straight years, leading to shortages at power producers and crippling outages.
