The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is to opt Kochi port for its foodgrain movement of both bulk and break bulk cargo movement. With this, Kochi port is to gain a lot. FCI recently floated a tender for multimodal contract for transport of rice from designated depots of Kakinada to Kerala through coastal movement.
AP cancels port project
The Rs 16,000 crore port-cum-industrial corridor deal has been cancelled by the Andhra Pradesh government. The government had signed the deal with Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority and Matrix Enport Holdings in 2008 for building a port-cum-industrial corridor.
Transmitting station in Chennai
The Union Minister of shipping GK Vasan laid the foundation of the Parangipettai Navtex Transmitting Station at a function in Chennai recently. The Minister said that as part of the government´s obligations under the Safety of Life at Sea Convention, his Ministry has asked its technical arm of the Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships (DGLL) to provide for continuous Navigational Telex (Navtex) coverage of Indian waters.
Paradip Port surpasses VPT
In cargo handling, Orissa´s Paradip Port has gained a lead over Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), Which had a record of handling the largest volume of cargo in the East Coast. Paradip Port has handled an additional five million tonne of cargo in this current year. Excluding handling of container and raw fertilisers, VPT has witnessed a decline in handling cargo including iron ore, thermal and cooking coal, and other cargo.
NTPC to use waterways
On transporting coal through waterways from Sagar Islands to Farakka in West Bengal, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) hopes to save about Rs 450 per tonne. NTPC wants to transport the imported coal of 3 million tonne through waterways on barges under a new arrangement with Jindal ITF, which has set up facilities for unloading 3 million tonne of imported coal every year at Sagar Islands.
Govt awards 13 port projects worth Rs.5,515 cr in Apr-Nov
During April-November period, the Union Shipping Ministry has awarded Rs 5,515 crore worth 80 million tonne (mt) projects. The awarded projects are more than 70 per cent of the 114 mt awarded last year at an investment of Rs 5,515 crore, according to reports. This year, so far, a total of 13 projects, including five public-private partnerships (PPPs), have been awarded.
AI lifts cargo from Trichy
The Air India Express has decided to lift cargo from Trichy airport. Exporters from the region have been demanding Air India Express to lift cargo for long, and after the grounding of Mihin Lanka from April this year, the cry for cargo became strident. Since most of the exports are perishables, the Sri Lankan is the preferred carrier since it is the only airline that connects to most of the destinations in Europe and the Middle East.
Logistics firms to invest in rural India
To deliver packages to the millions of online shoppers in rural India, logistics sector is likely to invest at least Rs 500 crore in the next five years by setting up small outlets in the vast rural landscape. Gati and Blue Dart Express are aggressively penetrating deeper into India to tap the potential lying with more internet savvy and well-off consumers. Investment will be in the form of technology, office space, people, fleet, warehouses and new processes.
Solar power metering
Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has invited suggestions and feedback from stakeholders on a proposal to introduce net metering for rooftop solar power generation as per guidelines laid down by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The commission claims that, with about 300 sunny days in Delhi a year and around 30 lakh households, Delhi has more than 700 sq km of built-up area for installation of photo-voltaic systems.
