Scindia seeks gas supply for $21 bn power plants
Union Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has emphasised over an urgent solution on fuel woes to generate an additional 14,000 mw of electricity. Over $21 billion worth of power plants have stalled due to natural gas shortfall, Scindia said. Besides seeking untied gas currently produced or likely to be produced in future by companies like State-owned ONGC and GSPC, Scindia wants fertiliser plants to spare some gas after fulfilling the requirement for producing urea.
Power producers lobby for diversion of gas
Power developers who run natural gas-based power plants are lobbying for the diversion of gas supply from the fertiliser sector and lowering of the plant capacity for recovery of fixed costs and assured return on equity. According to some estimate, an increase in the price of natural gas by $1 would result in fertiliser plants taking a hit of Rs 3,155 crore per annum for producing 23 million tonne (mn t) of urea in 2013-14 and Rs 4,144 crore a year for 32 mn t from 2017-18. Factory output grows a tepid 2% in April
Factory output as measured by the index of industrial production (IIP) grew at a slower rate of 2 per cent in April on a year-on-year basis compared to the revised growth of 3.4 per cent in March 2013.
