Union Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has said that India allows foreign airlines to invest as much as 49 per cent stake in local airline firms regardless of whether the investment is made before a joint venture is formed or after. Singh was instrumental in permitting foreign carriers to invest in local airlines by amending the existing foreign direct investment rules, as part of efforts to help local airlines get much-needed funds.

India plans more roads, new ports to up its growth

India will construct more roads and new ports to remove infrastructure bottlenecks that hamper its growth. The new ports will be set up in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal that will add capacity of 100 million tonne, Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said in his annual budget speech recently. The government will also award 3,000 kilometre (1,864- miles) of road projects in the first half of the year starting April 1, he said.

India's no-frill carriers have started thinking of buying smaller aircraft with IndiGo even evaluating launching a regional subsidiary. The move follows the government focusing more on improving regional connectivity, a leading aviation consultancy firm has said.
