Dip in Railways’ October freight load
For Indian Railways, October proved to be a bad month in freight loading. There was a drop of 1.67 million tonne during the month. The reason was major freight loading zonal railways were hit by the inclement weather, particularly cyclone Phailin.
Now improved headlights for locomotives
For brighter visibility of tracks, especially at locations with bends, East Coast Railway (ECoR) has designed, developed and provided 'Four Beam Headlights' on its locomotives. The headlights are first of its kind in Indian Railways. Generally, the locomotives run on Indian Railways are fitted with Twin Beam Headlights where the focus is on a straight line.
Bharat Forge bags crank shaft order from IR
Indian Railways (IR) has always imported its crankshaft, but recently for the first time has placed an order with Bharat Forge. According to the company, Bharat Forge is the only crankshaft manufacturer in India which caters to the industrial sector. Indian Railways has produced the prototype 5,500 hp diesel locomotives (WDG5) which are already running as a pilot project in North Central Railway. This loco is developed by Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi, a production unit of Indian Railways.
Railways mulls to switch over to LNG for its locomotives
Indian Railways' Research Design & Standard Organisation (RDSO) is developing locomotive prototype which will run on LNG. The Railways plans to build around 20 LNG-based locomotives once the prototype proves to be successful. The Railways expects to halve the operating cost of locomotives even at the current enhanced LNG prices.
Railways to build road overbridges at select level-crossings
Union Minister of Railways Mallikarjun Kharge has stated that Indian Railways has decided to construct road overbridges (RoBs) at level-crossings based on feasibility studies. The RoBs would be commissioned wherever train-vehicle unit is greater than one lakh count, he added. Kharge was in Puducherry in connection with the launch of the new Tirupati–Puducherry weekly express on September 17.
