The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was set up in 1986. Since then till 2008, only five waterways could be declared as National Waterways. Work could be started on only three of them: National Waterway or NW-1 that is the Ganga National Waterway, NW-2 that is the Brahmaputra Waterway and NW-3 comprising the backwaters of Kerala.
Shipping ministry to procure LNG vessels
The ministry of shipping has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Petronet LNG Ltd at the Maritime India Summit in April, with the objective of promoting the usage of LNG barges on National Waterway-1 on the river Ganga.

IWAI signs contract with DST for NW-1 special vessels
With its objective of providing safe, environment friendly and economical mode of transportation through National Waterway-1 (NW-1), the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a contract with DST, Germany to design vessels, especially suited to navigate the 1,620 km stretch of NW-1.
Funding National Waterways
India has remarkable potential of 14,500 km of navigable waterways. However, only 4,300 km comprising five waterways have been designated as National Waterways. Realising the exponential growth in this sector in the coming years, the government in the year 2016 has, under the National Waterways Act 2016, declared an additional 106 inland waterways which brings the total number of National Waterways to 111.
