Sagar Island seaport’s phase I to start from 2017
Chairman of Kolkata port RPS Kahlon has said that
construction work on the Rs 8,000-crore Sagar Island seaport in West Bengal would begin in two years and the first phase operations would commence from 2017. Once the port commence operations, cargo handling at the existing Kolkata port would be stopped and the place could be used as anchoring for barges, Kahlon said.

Major ports witness decline in staff strength
Major ports like Mumbai Port Trust, VO Chidambaranar Port, Kolkata Port Trust, and Chennai Port Trust witnessed decline in employee strength at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5 percent or above. In order to reverse the decline in cargo traffic at Kolkata Port, the authority planned to invest Rs 15,000 crore on various development projects till the end of the 12th Five Year Plan (2016-17). Cargo handling at the port declined to 43.245 million tonne (mn t) in 2011-12 compared to 47.545 mn t in the previous fiscal. The decline is attributed mainly to a fall in liquid bulk as also in crude oil movement.
