Buoyed by pick up in demand, India´s 12 major ports saw cargo traffic increase by 3.36 per cent to 499.23 mt in the first 10 months of the current fiscal. These top ports handled 483.01 mt cargo during April-Jan of the last fiscal.

The Kolkata Port has been adjudged ´Major Port of the Year´ for the year 2014-15 among the 12 major ports in India at the Gateway Award 2015 ceremony. The port received this award for increased cargo volumes, optimising capacity utilisation, growth in output per berth and customer satisfaction.

Sagar Island seaport’s phase I to start from 2017
Chairman of Kolkata port RPS Kahlon has said that
construction work on the Rs 8,000-crore Sagar Island seaport in West Bengal would begin in two years and the first phase operations would commence from 2017. Once the port commence operations, cargo handling at the existing Kolkata port would be stopped and the place could be used as anchoring for barges, Kahlon said.

Industry observers raise concern about delay in the slew of port projects proposed in the Kolkata port. For the last 10 years, authorities have been proposing to set up cargo handling facilities at Sagar Island closer to sea.
Major ports witness decline in staff strength
Major ports like Mumbai Port Trust, VO Chidambaranar Port, Kolkata Port Trust, and Chennai Port Trust witnessed decline in employee strength at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5 percent or above. This was observed in a study titled titled ‘Employment Scenario at Major, Minor and Intermediate Ports in India’ conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Indu

In order to reverse the decline in cargo traffic at Kolkata Port, the authority planned to invest Rs 15,000 crore on various development projects till the end of the 12th Five Year Plan (2016-17). Cargo handling at the port declined to 43.245 million tonne (mn t) in 2011-12 compared to 47.545 mn t in the previous fiscal. The decline is attributed mainly to a fall in liquid bulk as also in crude oil movement.
