Plea to shift proposed major port to Ramaiahpatnam
Businessmen in Ongole in Andhra Pradesh have urged the Union government to establish the proposed major port at Ramaiahpatnam of Prakasam district instead of Dugarajapatnam in Nellore district. The businessmen claimed that the major port was originally planned at Ramaiahpatnam and appealed to the Centre not to shift it to Durgarajapuram.
AP to get another major port at Rs 9,600 cr
On the proposed major port at Dugarajapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, RITES has submitted a feasibility report. The port is planned to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 9,600 crore.
VPT to set up a major port in Nellore district
With an investment of Rs 9,500 crore, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) will establish a major port at Duggarajupatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The exact location proposed for the port is at Duggarajupatnam, where four berths would be constructed. The site would be developed as a major port in the East Coast, VPT said in Visakhapatnam.
Major ports witness decline in profits
The country's 12 major ports witnessed decline in profit in recent years. The aggregate profit of the 12 major ports declined to Rs 1,790.92 crore in 2011-12 from Rs 1,946.38 crore in 2010-11. The combined net profit of these ports declined further to Rs 1,220.61 crore in 2012-13. These 12 ports also witnessed contraction in cargo volume from 570 mn t in 2010-11 to 560 mn t in 2011-12.
Capacity of major ports stand at 744 mn tpa
As on March 31, 2013, the aggregate capacity of all major ports in the country stood at 744.91 million tonne per annum (mn tpa).
