Odisha aims to reopen18 more mines by July-end

Coal demand falls
Global coal prices and demand have fallen, as coal is being replaced by other sources of energy. It is replaced by shale gas in the US and is likely to lose out to renewable energy in China. In India, the new government is keen to accelerate mining to unlock indigenous coal reserves of 200 billion metric tonnes.
New mining policy in Goa
Goa Government has said it will adopt a transparent mechanism to award mining leases in future and was studying the SC order lifting ban on iron ore extraction before taking a decision on vacating current mine operators whose fate hangs in balance.
Action plan for CIL
Coal India (CIL) has been asked by the new government to prepare an action plan for enhancing output over the next five years and fast-track the completion of projects and expansion of existing coal mines. The government has also asked CIL to adopt an action plan for technology development and modernisation of mines.
Odisha renews leases of 4 iron ore blocks
The Odisha government has renewed leases of three captive mines of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and one of Odisha Mining Corporation, paving the way for resumption of mining operations in the state after a fortnight.
