The Central Government will directly spend about Rs.12,000 crore to rebuild roads on Char Dham and Hemkund Saheb pilgrim routes in Uttarakhand which were damaged during the 2013 floods, adversely affecting the tourism business in the state, a union government official said. The project will be completed in the next four years.

State roads to become NH
The government is to declare about 7,200 km of roads in approximately 132 districts as national highways. The move is seen as a last minute attempt by the government to improve its tally to bringing in more roads under the NH network. In the past four-and-a-half years, about 10,000 km of state highways were added to the NH network and the fresh addition will take the tally to over 17,000 km under this umbrella.
More than 3,000-km highway projects yet to take off
More than 3,000 km of highway projects awarded about two years back under the public private partnership (PPP) mode are yet to take off. Both government and private parties are to blame for this mess. The reason for this delay can be attributed to government bodies for delay in taking policy decisions, banks who have become more stringent while sanctioning loans and are asking for 100% land availability as a pre-condition, dip in economic growth leading to decrease in traffic flow.
Concessionaire told to restore destination signages on NH-8
The maintenance and repair of National Highways is a continuous processes and being maintained in the traffic worthy condition within available recourses. However, the condition of Gurgaon ĂâKotputali-Jaipur section of NH-8 was bad particularly during monsoon. At present this section is maintained by NHAI through concessionaire as per provision of concession agreement.
India widens its 14,000 km highways into 4-lanes
About 14,000 km length of National Highways has been converted into four lanes during the last ten years i.e. 2004 to 2012 by National Highways Authority of India, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Tushar A Chaudhary stated in the Rajya Sabha recently.
Litigation stalls work on NH-1 in Punjab: Govt
The stretch of National Highways (NH-1) between Shambhu and Amritsar falls in the jurisdiction of two projects namely Panipat to Jalandhar and Jalandhar to Amritsar, said Sarvey Sathyanarayana, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in a reply to a question in Lok Sabha on December 9.
Kerala to develop NHs into 45-m width
Kerala government will see to that the national highways in the state be developed with 45-metre width, said the State Public Works Department Minister VK Ebrahim Kunju. The Minister said this at the two-day seminar on ĂâInnovative initiatives for road developmentĂâ beginning on November 6 in Thiruvananthapuram.
WB loan for rural roads
The World Bank has approved a loan of $500 million loan for road projects in the backward areas in India. The World Bank loan will focus on three low-income states - Rajasthan, Bihar and Orissa - and on less developed regions in Karnataka and West Bengal.
