As the Karnataka government took a decision to hire services of two captains for minor ports on contract basis at Old Mangalore Port, the agitating users of Old Mangalore Port withdrew their strike on October 22. They were demanding for the services of the captains for survey of vessels.

Strike hits work at Old Mangalore Port
As members of the Old Mangalore Port UsersÂ’ Association went on a strike, work there came to a stand still on October 22. The protestors were demanding the appointment of the surveyor of vessel at the port.
Cargo vessels at Old Mlore port ground since Sep 15
Since last September 15, at least 55 cargo vessels that operate from Old Mangalore Port to Lakshadweep are idling. Failure on the part of the department of ports to carry out an annual inspection of vessels has meant they are berthed at the port, and not able to ply to Lakshadweep.
10 minor ports in Karnataka handle 15.8 lakh t cargo
Reports suggest that around 10 minor ports in Karnataka together handled approximately 15.81 lakh tonne of cargo during 2011-12. These minor ports are Karwar, Belikeri, Tadri, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Kundapur, Hangarakatta, Malpe, Padubidri and Old Mangalore. These ports are under the control of the state government
Proposed wharf project may cost Rs 44.5 cr
The proposed wharf project at at Mangalore Old Port is estimated to cost around Rs 44.5 crore, Lakshadweep MP Muhammad Hamdullah Sayeed informed reporters. The Lakshadweep government proposed to construct the wharf at the port and expects to begin work on it once the Karnataka government clears the proposal

The Lakshadweep union territory government has sent a draft proposal to the Karnataka government to set up a 300-metre-long dedicated wharf at Old Mangalore Port for the benefit of the Lakshadweep administration.
