A Ray of Hope, Amid the Gloom
Amidst the chaos seen in the power sector, with 22,000 MW thermal power projects lying idle for the need of coal or gas and lenders taking power generating assets to National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to recover dues, the transmission sector- with longer life cycle and lower risks- has exhibited the only ray of hope for investors and developers alike.
5 states for buying 3,000 MW sans PPAs
Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar and Jharkhand together want to buy 3,000 MW of power under a government scheme to promote purchases from plants without PPAs.
Matching the Grid Parity
Renewable energy tariffs for both·solar and wind power·have touched grid parity from 2HFY17. The levelised tariffs dropped to Rs 2.44/kWh in solar energy and Rs 2.65/kWh in wind energy after the bidding in 1HFY18.
Energy Transition
A record capacity of over 75 GW was added over the last three years leading to over-capacity in thermal power. Industry doesn't see new thermal capacity being planned for some time, however, the existing capacity close to commissioning, or under construction will come to grid.
We need more govt involvement to start stuck projects
If you look at the current state of power generation projects in India, we have around 40-45 GW of stranded capacity. Of this, around 10-15 GW of capacity is operational, but unable to generate any power due to lack of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

GST launch takes its toll on the June IIP numbers
The IIP number for the month of June 2017 came in sharply lower at -0.1% compared to 1.7% in the previous month of May 2017. A correction in the IIP was expected in the month of June due to the impact of the GST launch, although it was not expected to dip into negative territory.
