The government will table a new Bill to facilitate a model agreement for PPPs in ports. ¨In the next two months, we will have a new model agreement, hopefully by June 30.

Private participation likely in modernisation of state-run ports
Drawing from the experience of the aviation and highways sectors, the Shipping Ministry is looking at modernising state-run sea ports with private sector support as a first step.
Funding National Waterways
India has remarkable potential of 14,500 km of navigable waterways. However, only 4,300 km comprising five waterways have been designated as National Waterways. Realising the exponential growth in this sector in the coming years, the government in the year 2016 has, under the National Waterways Act 2016, declared an additional 106 inland waterways which brings the total number of National Waterways to 111.
Government aims to reduce logistic costs under Sagarmala Project
High logistical cost prevailing in India is the biggest hindrance for Indian businesses on the global level and the Ministry of Shipping will aim to reduce the cost under the Sagarmala Project, said Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, on the second day of the Maritime India Summit 2016.

The government is planning four new major ports at Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh at an investment of Rs.32,000 crore under the PPP model.

Nitin Gadkari launches Green Highways Policy
Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has launched the Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification & Maintenance) Policy, 2015. The aim of the policy is to promote greening of highway corridors with participation of the community, farmers, private sector, NGOs, and government institutions.
Govt eyes Rs.2,500 cr profit from ports in two years
Union minister Nitin Gadkari has said the Centre is targeting a net profit of Rs 2,500 crore from its 12 major ports in the next two years. Shipping and waterways would contribute at least one per cent to the country´s GDP by March 2016, he added.
Foreign fleet owners may gain
An Indian cabinet decision to decentralise shipping arrangements for import of cargo owned or controlled by government departments and state-owned firms will remove an assured business opportunity for local fleet owners.
