The Union government on April 9 stated that it would invest Rs 5,000 crore towards conversion of 10,000 km of state roads into National Highways over the next three-five years. Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Sarvey Sathyanarayana said in Delhi that the Centre is to spend about Rs 5,000 crore in a phased manner and will complete 10,000 km National Highways in Andhra Pradesh in the next 3-5 years.

Govt takes initiative for better functioning of power grids
For proper functioning of electricity grids in the country, the Union government is planning to give more powers to State electricity regulatory commissions and load dispatch centres. To facilitate this, the Centre plans to amend the laws concerned. A panel headed by Chairman of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) - the apex planning body for the power sector - is expected to soon submit its report to the Power Ministry in this regard.

New regulator to replace DGCA
The Union government is planning a new aviation regulator to replace the present Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). To facilitate formation of the new aviation regulator a bill is likely to be tabled in the Parliament in the next part of the Budget Session starting later this month.
Global firms may operate new airports at two metros
The Union government is considering giving the management control of the new Kolkata and Chennai airports, built by the Airports Authority of India, to global operators through a competitive bidding process.
The Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said on March 26 that the AAI could set up joint ventures with major foreign airport operators to carry out operations and management of these two crucial metro airports.
AirAsia-Tata JV gets Indian govt’s nod
The Union government on March 26 stated that it had cleared Malaysian budget carrier AirAsiaÂ’s proposal to start a passenger airline in India in partnership with the Tata Group, with an investment of Rs 81 crore. The proposal was cleared by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).
OMCs to get Rs 25K cr additional cash subsidy
The Union government will pay Rs 25,000 crore additional cash subsidy to the government-owned fuel retailers to cover for the revenue they lost on selling auto and cooking fuel below cost this fiscal. The Finance Ministry has so far provided Rs 55,000 crore to Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL) to cover for part of the revenue they lost on selling diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene at government controlled rates which are below the cost.
Two rail projects likely for coal evacuation by FY17
The Union government on March 19 stated that two rail projects - Tori-Shivpur and Gopalpur-Monaharpur - with investment of Rs 3,045 crore are likely to be completed by the end of 2017 and will facilitate coal evacuation besides pushing up the fuel production.
Nod to Rs 7,915 cr road projects in UP, Maha, Gujarat, Haryana
The Union government on March 18 approved Rs 7,915 crore road projects in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana under its flagship road building programme National Highways Development Project (NHDP). The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), in its meeting accorded approval to the four projects to be built under phases III, IV and V on Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis.
Centre seeks land for new Patna international airport
The Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has said on March 7 that the Union government plans to build a new international airport at Bihta, outside Patna, but availability of land from the State government is an issue. Stating this in Rajya Sabha, he said since there is little scope for expansion of the Patna airport, a new facility is being proposed outside Bihar's capital city.
