The Union government has stated that it won't be able to award 4,000 km of highways on 100 per cent government funding mode known as engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) during this fiscal. The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry was pinning its hope in these contracts to push its performance this year, at a time when private investors are showing no interest.

Centre gives nod to road projects worth Rs 38,500 cr
With an objective to boost road connectivity to rural areas in the country the Union government on February 7 cleared road projects worth about Rs 38,500 crore under the rural road connectivity scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) which was launched in 2000.
Equipment makers see early revival of infra sector
As the Union government has recently taken policy initiative and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced interest rate, there are early signs of revival in the infrastructure sector, says the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers' Association.
MP gets Centre’s nod to construct 4,675 km roads
Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY), the Union government has sanctioned 4,675 km long 1,521 new roads costing Rs 1,780 crore to Madhya Pradesh. Following construction of these roads, 1,600 habitats will be linked by all-weather roads with development block, tehsil and district levels, an official release issued in Bhopal said.

The Union Government approved the construction of two roads in Arunachal Pradesh - Bameng to Lada (55 km) and Miao to Vijaynagar (157 km) - in principle under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
Govt hopes to award 6,000 km contracts under EPC mode
The Union government would be able to give contracts for more than 6,000 km this fiscal on getting certain procedural approvals, said the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister CP Joshi on January 28. Under the EPC model (engineering, procurement and construction), the government spends the entire money required to build roads which would be instrumental in attracting builders who are at present shying away from highways projects for want of funds, he said.
Road contractors may be given more time to get funds
In a bid to prevent the exodus of private road contractors from highway projects, the Union government plans to extend the time required for road contractors to achieve financial closure. This is in case there is a delay in getting the required government clearances.

AP likely to get Rs 400.81 cr for its road projects
The Union government is likely to approve rural road project proposals of Rs 400.81 crore for 138 road works in Andhra Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh on January 16 informed this to the State Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy through a letter.
Air India concerned over FDI in aviation
Indian State-owned Air India has warned the Union government that allowing investments by foreign airlines will hurt the interests of domestic airlines and prevent Indian airports from developing into international hubs. The government should study the potential impact of such investment on the domestic aviation sector as a whole, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Rohit Nandan wrote in a letter to Aviation Secretary KN Srivastava in December, sources said.
