The Union Road Ministry has made ambitious plans to improve road infrastructure, including an accelerated road development programme in the region.

To check the quality of road construction in the country, the Union Road Ministry has decided to engage independent experts. The Ministry said that it has received several complaints of poor quality of road construction. The independent experts will keep a vigil on various parameters such as standard and timely execution of road projects, the Ministry said.

Govt to review NHAI-GMR proposal over premium payment
The National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI's) recommendation with regard to road developers' premium payment is likely to be reviewed by the Union Road Ministry. The Ministry will review NHAI's recommendation to defer payment of premium by companies like GMR who has agreed to certain conditions by the Authority to ensure they do not leave the project after the government approves the proposal.
Toll on highways may be reduced to 40% after 30-yrs
The Union Road Ministry is mulling over a proposal to reduce national highway toll to only 40 per cent of the prevailing rate after a period of 30 years. If implemented, it will bring relief to commuters traveling on national highways.
