The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has scaled down its projects award target by nearly half to 5,000 km for this financial year compared to target of 9,500 km in 2012-13. Keeping in view of a dismal show last fiscal, the government has cut down the awarding of the road contracts. Last fiscal, the Ministry was barely able to award 15 per cent of the targeted 9,500 km of highways.

Govt targets to award 9,000 km road projects in FY14
The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry on April 16 stated that it has fixed an internal target of giving 9,000 km of projects in 2013-14 to ensure award of at least 7,300 km to revive the sector. The Ministry in an official statement said that for the FY 2013-14, the internal target has been fixed at 9,000 km of National Highways so as to ensure award of at least 7300 km.
Road Ministry seeks nod for Rs 500 cr small projects
In the fourth phase of the National Highway Development Programme (NHDP), the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has sought permission to clear projects costing up to Rs 500 crore in an attempt to expedite investments. At present, all road projects are cleared by inter-ministerial committees, which the Ministry says causes delay.

Centre blames State’s laxity for delay of NH-8 widening
The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has blamed the Rajasthan government's indolence in land acquisition as prime cause for the delay of road projects, especially in the widening of NH-8 between Jaipur and Delhi. According to NHAI officials, the Ministry lists the major reason for delay as the failure of the State government in acquiring land at Shahpura, Pawata , Kotputli and Behror.
