Reports say that the recent move by the Tariff Authority on Major Ports (TAMP) to reduce tariff charged by private container terminal operators at JNPT has caused losses to them. Following this, the private operators are deliberately reducing their container cargo handling leading to congestion at the port, which is operating at more than 120 per cent of its existing capacity.

It is learnt that APM Terminals and DP World have been handling cargo as per their mandated minimum throughput, but they were earlier known for handling excess cargo.

In February, the TAMP ordered Gateway Terminals India (GTI) at JNPT, to reduce tariff by 44.28 per cent. In March, the authority also ordered the Nhava Shava International Container Terminal (NSICT), the other terminal operated by DP World, to cut rates by 27.85 per cent.
