Improved billing efficiency and financial discipline helped Indian discoms drive the sector’s firstever profitability milestone in FY2025.

For the third year in a row, Tata Power‑led Odisha distribution companies (discoms) have achieved top‑tier rankings in the Fourteenth Integrated Ratings and Rankings Report of Power Distribution Utilities for FY2025. Released by the Ministry of Power, the report evaluated 65 utilities nationwide, recognising the transformative impact of Tata Power’s Odisha discoms on the state’s power infrastructure.

TP Northern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPNODL) emerged as a standout performer, securing fifth rank nationally. Both TP Central Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPCODL) and TPNODL maintained the prestigious A+ grade, while TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL) earned a strong A grade.

Gajanan Kale, Chief of Odisha Distribution Business and CEO, TPNODL, said, “Being ranked among the top five utilities validates our strategic investments in technology and customer‑first initiatives, reaffirming our commitment to enhancing reliability and consumer experience.”

The report highlights Odisha’s upward trajectory in power distribution, citing improved billing efficiency and financial discipline. TPNODL and TPCODL recorded billing efficiency gains of over two percentage points, while all three discoms maintained receivables at 60 days or less. These achievements contributed to the broader national milestone of the distribution sector turning profitable for the first time in FY2025.

By adopting smart grid automation, AI‑driven customer support, and strategic loss reduction, Tata Power’s Odisha discoms continue to set national benchmarks for distribution excellence. In partnership with the Government of Odisha, these joint ventures represent one of India’s most ambitious distribution reform programmes.

Other top performers include Torrent Power, whose licensed units in Ahmedabad and Surat achieved a perfect score of 100 to secure first rank; Adani Electricity Mumbai, which retained its A+ national rating; and Noida Power Co. Ltd (NPCL), which earned an A+ rating and seventh rank, marking significant improvement among state discoms.
