Tata Steel and Adhunik Power & Natural Resource will have to secure forest approval for operating the Ganeshpur coalmine in Latehar, Jharkhand, which was allocated to them for their thermal projects.

The coal mine has a production capacity of four million tonne per annum (normative). Recently, the ministry of environment and forest asked the joint venture of these two firms to secure forest clearances before seeking environment nod for the mining project. The approval of the central government is essential for diversion of land for non-forestry purposes. Stage-I forest clearance for the coal mining project is required, as per an environment ministry panel, reports suggest. The company has applied to the panel for environment clearances.

The joint venture firms were also asked to provide information on the changed location of power plant and mine among others by the Expert Appraisal Committee of MoEF.
