Tata Steel will start using coastal and inland waterways in India to transport raw material to its factories and finished goods along the coastline, as it looks at saving on freight and energy costs.

The company, which is setting up a Rs 40,000 crore project in Kalinganagar, Odisha, plans to transport 15-20 per cent goods in the next 3-5 years by water from almost zero now. Currently, Tata Steel transports 63 per cent cargo by rail and 37 per cent by road.
