In a move that signifies the early inauguration of the Rs 4,000-crore L&T port-cum-shipyard at Kattupalli in North Chennai, Tamil Nadu government held talks with the firm on the issue of jobs.

Reports suggest that officials from various ministries of the state government held discussions with the construction major on January 1 and 2 on providing jobs to the local people, who have been alleging that their livelihood will be affected due to the project.

In a statement, the state Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said that the construction of the project is at a final stage. L&T had earlier given jobs to 220 fishermen, and agreed to absorb another 850 people during the former governmentÂ’s rule. However, this did not happen.

When the present government took charge last February, the company offered jobs to another 131 people. During the two-day long discussions, the company officials have agreed to provide jobs to 120 more. Of this, half will employed directly and another 60 will be employed on completion of a training programme.

While the company is ready with the required infrastructure for over six months, it is awaiting the final word from the state government for formal inauguration.
