TN to bring new system to maintain roads, highways

In Tamil Nadu, the Jayalalithaa-led government on January 23 announced the introduction of a new performance-based maintenance contract system for maintaining the roads and highways in the state. The news system is considered as a major fillip to road infrastructure in the state.

According to an official release, apart from laying of new roads, the maintenance of these roads was the key for sustaining the road infrastructure development. Keeping this in mind, the Chief Minister announced that the existing system of maintenance of roads would be done away with and the ‘Performance Based Maintenance Contract system for road maintenance would be introduced.

The release said that under the system the roads will be maintained under a single contract system by repairing, renovating, strengthening and upgrading the roads on a rotation basis for five years. In the first phase, the 191.4 km highway roads and 185.988 km district roads in Pollachi at a cost of Rs 121.62 crore and Rs 112.31 crore respectively, would be taken up for maintenance under the Performance Based Maintenance Contract system.

This would not only ensure upgradation of the road transport system, but would also ease traffic congestion in the cities paving way for the people to reach their choice of destination in a hassle-free manner.

The release said road infrastructure development plays a key role in the State’s economic development and in sustaining the livelihood of the people the State.
