A surge in electricity demand has prompted the company to revise its ¥20-billion investment announced in July 2024, committing an additional ¥35 billion to scale up its manufacturing facilities in Kawasaki and Hyderabad.

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) has announced a ¥55-billion (approximately $368 million / ₹32.32 billion) investment to expand its power transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment business by FY2027.

The investment is expected to more than double the combined production capacity at Toshiba’s key facilities in Japan and India by FY2030, compared to FY2024 levels.

The decision, announced by the Kawasaki-headquartered Japanese corporation, comes in response to accelerating global electricity demand and the need for resilient grid infrastructure.

This initiative builds on the ¥20-billion investment announced in July 2024 for FY2024-26. With demand now projected to exceed initial forecasts, Toshiba has committed an additional ¥35 billion to its Hamakawasaki Operations in Kawasaki, Japan, and Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt Ltd (TTDI) in Hyderabad, India.

Explaining the rationale behind the expanded investment, Hiroshi Kaneta, Vice President, Grid Solution Division, observed, “As global electricity demand continues to rise, ensuring a stable supply of T&D equipment is more critical than ever. In Japan, demand is expected to surge through 2030 and remain high, driven by the renewal of aging infrastructure, the expansion of renewable energy, and the construction of new data centres. In India, electricity demand continues to rise rapidly, fuelled by economic and urban population growth and the accelerated adoption of renewable energy.”

As a leading supplier of high-voltage T&D equipment, Toshiba will strengthen its manufacturing capabilities by modernising existing production lines, constructing new ones, and upgrading factory infrastructure at both Hamakawasaki and TTDI. In addition to these shared initiatives, each site will implement measures tailored to its operational context.

Power Equipment Boost

At Hamakawasaki, Toshiba will also renovate employee welfare facilities to improve the working environment, aligning with its broader operational excellence goals. At TTDI, the company will expand its product portfolio to better serve both the Indian market and international customers across North America, Europe, and the Middle East, aiming to increase its global market share.

T&D equipment is essential for delivering electricity from power plants to consumers and plays a vital role in ensuring grid stability. Toshiba brings over 100 years of experience in manufacturing switchgear, transformers, surge arresters, and other critical T&D components.

Looking ahead, Toshiba plans to leverage its technological expertise and global track record to help build robust, future-ready power grids. The company will continue to invest in R&D for next-generation technologies—including those supporting carbon neutrality—while enhancing workplace safety and operational agility across its global facilities.
