JSPL has been supplying steel to all the major transmission tower manufacturers across the country for domestic as well as international power transmission projects.

Growing population and industrialisation create a huge need for electrical energy. With the production of electricity, it is also important for efficient transmission of this electricity to desired areas.

Generation and transmission are two important components of the power sector. With the growth in industrialisation and rapid urbanisation, the power generation capacity has increased steeply over the past decade. Power generation areas being unevenly distributed across the country, a strong demand for effective transmission of this power over long distances is created. Transmission Line Tower (TLT) sector has contributed enormously towards this need for transmitting power from one place to another with the help of power transmission lines. Power transmission sector remained closed to private players in the early periods. With the formation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) as a Central Transmission Utility (CTU) and introduction of many private players for transmission tower fabrication and erection, the pace in this sector picked up in terms of its growth.

Evolution
Transmission Line Towers (TLT) form an integral part of any power transmission line. During its development period, a lot of changes were incorporated in terms of its design and material being used for towers. The type of material used for the fabrication of towers has been a major point of interest for the experts in this field.

Importance of Steel
Material used for tower fabrication has undergone many changes during its use over the period of time. Out of wood, concrete, and steel as tower materials, steel has become a preferred choice for the manufacturers, and has been used on a large-scale for tower fabrication due to its load bearing capacity and resistance to wind load, structure weight, etc. Concrete towers being bulkier and wood offering a limitation in terms of the maximum height of tower that can be achieved, steel has all the important characteristics to become the preferred material for transmission tower fabrication.

– Steel is readily available
– It is available from medium to high strength
– Life expectancy is higher as compared to wood and concrete
– Higher strength to weight ratio as compared to other materials

Contribution of JSPL
While designing a transmission tower, many factors are taken into consideration- wind load, dead load of the tower, load of transmission wires, etc. Looking from the design point of view, to achieve optimisation, in case of steel, angle profiles have been used as a construction material for the towers.

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) has been a pioneer in supplying angle sections to the transmission tower manufacturers. JSPL from its Medium and Light Structural Mill (MLSM) at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh has been supplying supreme quality medium and high strength angles in the range of 50 X 50 to 250 X 250 as per Indian as well as international standards from lower strength to higher strength, including corrosion resistance grades.

JSPL is an approved supplier for PGCIL to supply steel for all its power transmission projects in India. Having proved its quality standards, time and again, JSPL has been supplying steel to all the major transmission tower manufacturers across the country for domestic as well as international power transmission projects.

In JSPL, Raigarh MLSM (Medium and light section mill) is the state-of-the-art mill to produce long products like angles, beams, channel etc. The product quality is the best in India.¨
