The Karnataka government has set aside Rs 10.13 crore for maintenance of rural roads in the district for 2013-14, the Udupi district in-charge Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake has said. Udupi will be developed as a heritage city under the capacity building project of the Union government and tourism will be given more priority.
The Minister stated that Rs 7 crore has been set aside for the development of roads that connect seven tourism spots in the district. The Varahi project, aimed at supporting sugar cane farmers, will be completed soon, he added.
The land in which the defunct Brahmavar sugar factory is located will be converted into a horticulture university for which talks are on at the government level.
Sorake said this at the 67th Independence Day celebration in Udupi district on August 15.
