The union cabinet may have cleared the Rs 845 crore capacity enhancement and modernisation project at the existing iron ore facilities in the Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

But labour unions are opposing the proposed project arguing that it may harm the interest of the port.

Recently, United Port and Dock Employees Union staged a dharna in front of administrative building of the port against the approval of the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs.

Instead, the union supported an earlier plan to augment and modernize existing iron ore facilities at inner and outer harbour by availing Rs 200 crore from Japanese Bank for International Cooperation.

Labour unions allege that the port was undervaluing the assets and capacity of Ore Handling Complex and hand over all facilities to the PPP operator for an upfront price of Rs 170 crore.

The union points out that the port had earlier estimated the value of the assets at Rs 252 crore.
