The Goa Public Works Department (PWD) has started work on the widening of roads in Arpora-Nagoa panchayat area. In the first phase, the road from the Arpora market junction to the Nagoa church is being widened.
A large number of trees have also been cut to facilitate the widening work. There has been a strong-felt need for widening of roads in Arpora-Nagoa because of the rising tourist traffic which has to cross the village which is located in between the two tourist hubs of Calangute and Anjuna.
The narrow roads in Arpora were leading to constant traffic jams in the village, it is learnt. The road being widened from the market to Nagoa church is the only approach road for motorists driving down from Panaji for the Saturday night markets and other places in the Anjuna coastal belt, while the other approach road from Calangute is also going to be widened after the land acquisition process is complete, said local MLA Michael Lobo.
Work is also expected to begin shortly on the new Arpora bridge linking Calangute and Arpora. The old bridge is single-lane which causes bottlenecks on the busy coastal tourism road from Calangute toAnjuna. The new bridge which will have two lanes is expected to ease the traffic congestion.
