The Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) has taken measures to complete the much-delayed 5.5 km-long Mulavukadu-Ernakulam road. Following public protests against the delay in executing the project, GIDA officials along with the consultant inspected the site to take a decision to restart construction activities on Thursday. The authority will also submit a report to the district collector. After completing the first stage, the authority will focus on the second phase between Pattalam camp to Goshree Bridge near Bolgatty Island.

The 5.5 km road from Mulavukadu to Ernakulam was to be executed in two phases at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore.

The outlay includes the construction of road and drains. Though GIDA and the Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organization ( Kitco) had agreed to complete the 2.5 km-long first phase in four months, the authority alleged that the Kitco’s contractor had failed to stick to the deadline after work began in November 2012. Despite GIDA giving a four-month extension, the contractor failed to complete the project.

It’s almost nine months and Kitco’s contractor has only constructed a 2km-long drain on the stretch. They have not begun road works, said an official. GIDA has now suggested bringing in a new contractor to execute the work.
