15 firms bid for Mumbai’s Pedder Road flyover contract

In Mumbai, as many as 15 infrastructure companies have evinced interest in the controversial Pedder Road Flyover project and their representatives attended a pre-bid meeting held by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) on January 28.

All major infrastructure firms active in Mumbai city were there. Most also purchased bid documents, a senior MSRDC official said. The 4.2-km flyover has been in limbo for more than a decade due to stiff opposition from nearby residents, including singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, and difficulties in securing CRZ clearance.

Pedder Road Residents Association is of the opinion that the project may not be the best solution to congestion on the narrow road. It has fixed a meeting with the expert appraisal committee of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to discuss the issue. The four-lane flyover will stretch from Lala Lajpatrai Road to GB Pant Chowk and is expected to cost Rs 380 crore.

After securing CRZ clearance late last year, MSRDC called bids for construction of the flyover in December and set February 14 as the last date for submissions.
