The 135-km Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) that is intended to link Haryana’s Palwal town with Uttar PraÂdesh’s Kundli, is facing further delay. While the cabinet committee on infrastructure and the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPAC) approved toll rates on par with those on national highways and the Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE), the Road Ministry insists on charging 50 percent more. The Ministry wants bypass rates because the EPE is a bypass, not a highway.
The EPE is part of an ambitious project to complete a ring road around Delhi, which woÂuld help almost 200,000 commuters bypass the capital every day. The 135-km WPE, which is also part of the project, is nearing completion.Plan panel member BK Chaturvedi said recently that the higher toll rates may limit the usage of the bypass and the purpose of setting it up may not be fulfilled.
