RINL, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is pioneering in recovery of waste energy to become self sufficient in power generation to meet its growing requirements and also to reduce its dependence on the state grid.
RINL adopted since inception state-of-the-art technologies in tapping the waste energy and there by becoming a trend setter in captive power generation in the steel industry.
As part of waste energy recovery in the expansion and up gradation of existing units, RINL is installing:
• 120 MW gas-based captive power plant utilising 100 per cent blast furnace gas for power generation at a total cost of Rs 677 crore. Brisk works are going on and the captive power plant will be operational in this year itself.
• Generation of another 20.6 MW from waste heat recovery on sinter cooler waste heat recovery system at sinter machine 1 & 2
• 14 MW will be generated from water heat recovery system in coke oven battery – 4.
• 14 MW of power will be generated from top pressure recovery turbine in blast furnace – 3.
With completion of the above projects, the power generation through waste energy will reach to 62 per cent of the total installed capacity of 523 MW, highest in the Indian steel industry.
RINL envisaged waste energy recovery technologies in the design stage itself to generate power. These include:
• The by-product gases at coke ovens and blast furnaces are also utilised in captive power plant to generate electricity of 115-120 MW.
• Gas expansion turbine station (top pressure energy recovery) at blast furnace 1 and 2 generates 24 MW of power.
• Coke dry quenching plant (solid waste heat recovery) and back pressure turbine station at coke ovens generate 15 MW of power.
RINL presently having the capacity to generate power of 286.5 MW and with the expansion and up gradation of existing units, the captive power generation will reach to 523 MW. RINL requires 486 MVA of power for expansion of 6.3 mtpa capacity.
