In Chennai, completion of the Thirumangalam flyover is further delayed. It was to be opened by April, but now it has a new deadline for completion — September. Work was delayed by land acquisition and lack of cooperation between government agencies. The flyover on Inner Ring Road will go over the junction of Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue and Mogappair Road, and will speed up travel for commuters from Koyambedu, Ambattur, Red Hills and Avadi.
Sources said construction has picked up pace over the last few months. The corporation has finished shifting storm water drains and the electricity board moved all utility cables. The authorities plan to open the flyover by September, said an engineer from the metro wing of the State Highways Department.
Land acquisition is yet to begin. Close to 2,000 square metres of land is required. Though the process has begun, we haven’t got hold of any, said the official. The flyover has two abutments and 19 piers, which have been completed. Five decks are yet to be constructed, said the engineer. Four of the five decks are pre-cast while one will be constructed on site. About 70 per cent of the construction is over, said the engineer.
