Commercial operations of the International Port of Colombo South Container Terminal Project at Colombo Port was flagged off on August 5. The new terminal has been constructed by China Communications Construction Company, Zhenhua Heavy Industries, FHDI Engineering Company and Third Highway Engineering Company. With $300 million cost the project has been constructed in 28 months.

The main objective of the Sri Lankan government is to use the port as the country’s distribution hub. The government expects it to play an important role in spurring development of its economy.

At the flagging off ceremony, along with Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, officials from the companies were also present. The terminal berthed ocean liner, CMA CGM PEGASUS, with a length of 363 metre and a carrying capacity of 11,400 TEU, which was largest container to berth at Colombo.
