Thermal coal remains India’s most important fuel used to generate electricity. With increasing environmental concerns, storage and handling of coal in large quantities has thrown up additional challenges. One of the major challenges lies in handling the coal in an environment-friendly manner. JSW Jaigarh Port has taken a major step towards this goal by planning and constructing a fully covered coal stack yard to meet the coal requirement of JSW’s 1,200 MW power plant Ratnagiri. The project involves construction of 440 m long covered shed housing 16 m high coal stack with mechanised facility such as stacker-cum-reclaimer (SCR) of capacity 4,000/2,000 T per hr with related conveyors. The shed is of 104 m span with 6 m high retaining walls supporting the roof structure. The roof at the crown is 46.5 m high from ground. The shed construction involved about 9,000 cu m of concrete work, 3,500 tonne of space frame structure and 45,000 sq m roof sheeting. The space frame structure was designed and supplied by Xuzhou Zhongmei Steel Construction Co, China whereas profiled colour coated sheets of JSW have been used as roofing material. The shed is also equipped with fire fighting and dust suppression system. The load trials of mechanised facility are in progress and work of construction of shed is in advanced stage and scheduled to be completed by end Oct 2013.
With the above structure in place, JSW Jaigarh Port is poised to create a landmark facility for handling coal in a most environment-friendly manner which will be unique in the country.
Liebherr
Cranes for India
Liebherr floating cargo cranes, Type CBG 350 carry out lightering operation offshore and complete discharging operation at the port. Two units delivered to Rishi Shipping unload Panamax and Capesize vessels, up to 300 m in length and 16 m in draught, in open waters and then unload their cargo at Kandla Port. Draught limitations and freight charges are so reduced. With the help of these floating cranes Kandla Port was the first to discharge a full load of 137,737 tonne of coal from a Capesize vessel, with an average turnover of 14,703 tonne per day.
The Liebherr CBG 350 is a dedicated heavy duty high performance four-rope grab crane designed for high speed continuous operation. Specific features for heavy duty conditions and operation in open water include a compact slewing column, specially designed heavy duty hoisting winches, heel trim alarm systems and emergency operation functions. Smooth and high speed operation is further supported with Liebherr’s own Litronic crane control and management system making the cranes ideally suited for round-the-clock working cycles.
Bulk handling with fixed cargo cranes on jetties: The aim of every importer/exporter is to optimise the total logistic costs and to deliver the cargo as fast as possible. However, the road/rail infrastructure in India is not adequate for hinterland transportation. Transportation by sea/inland water is faster, cheaper and safer.
The execution of the Fixed Cargo Crane (FCC) concept for onshore operation helps to handle cargo more efficiently with less investment. Due to its slender design and suitability for mounting on RCC foundation, the crane does not require a complete jetty. Only a foundation to mount the crane must be constructed, which saves on investment in terms of creating superstructure.
