Flag carrier commits itself to a robust presence at India’s newest gateway with integrated passenger and cargo operations.
In a significant move to expand its footprint across India’s fast-expanding aviation landscape, the Air India Group has announced a comprehensive operational plan for Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The Tata Group-owned airline conglomerate will establish a strong presence at the upcoming greenfield airport, which is expected to commence commercial operations in 2024.
The plan includes deploying passenger and cargo services across Air India, Air India Express, and AIX Connect, with a focus on enhancing connectivity, operational efficiency, and customer experience. The group will also set up dedicated infrastructure at NMIA to support seamless operations and future growth.
Senior leadership from Air India Group and NMIA met recently to discuss operational readiness and strategic alignment. The meeting was attended by Campbell Wilson, Air India CEO & Managing Director, Aloke Singh, Managing Director, Air India, and Sanjay Kumar, CEO, AIX Connect, alongside senior officials from NMIA.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India, stated, “We are delighted to be working closely with Navi Mumbai International Airport to establish a robust operational base. This partnership aligns with our vision to offer world-class service and expand our reach across key markets.”
The group’s commitment to NMIA is part of its broader Vihaan.AI transformation strategy, which includes fleet expansion, network optimisation, and digital upgrades. By establishing early operational readiness at NMIA, Air India aims to leverage the airport’s modern infrastructure and strategic location to strengthen its domestic and international network.
The Air India Group’s presence at NMIA is expected to catalyse regional growth, support cargo throughput, and contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a global aviation hub. The airport, developed by Adani Airports, will serve as a second international gateway to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, easing congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and unlocking new economic corridors.
