Union Minister of Shipping GK Vasan informed that the cabinet cleared the proposed Rs 1,700-crore second dock complex project at Haldia recently.

It is learnt that the West Bengal government allocated around 160 acre of land for the proposed facility.

Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), however, failed to attract private participants for the project. Though the port authorities claimed that companies such as Shapoorji Pallonji Infrastructure, Gammon India, JSW Infrastructure, Jindal ITF showed interest in the project, none of the participants submitted final bid documents last month.

Lack of cargo coupled with alleged law and order problems had forced ABG-LDA run Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT) to withdraw operations from existing Haldia dock complex in October last year.

The proposed second dock project at Haldia in Salukhali is one of the three new projects proposed by KoPT. The other two projects are Diamond Harbour container terminal, and a new deep-sea port at the Sagar Island.
