Cargo volume at Kolkata Port declines in Apr-Dec 2012

Kolkata Port Trust (including Haldia ) witnessed 14.65 per cent decline in cargo handling at 28.86 mn t
during April and December 2012. Haldia alone recorded 17.31 per cent drop in cargo volume at 20.2 mn t, official data shows.

The other ports recording negative growth included Visakhapatnam 16.04 per cent at 44.2 mn t; and Chennai 4.87 per cent at 39.89 mn t.

During the above nine months of 2012-13, the countryÂ’s major ports posted over 3 per cent drop in traffic throughput at 405.77 million tonne (mn t). The throughput during the same period of the previous year was 418.21 mn t.

However, major ports in Kandla, Ennore, New Mangalore, Mumbai recorded positive growth. Volume-wise Kandla topped the list with a throughput of 69.5 mn t. But the growth at 14.1 per cent was lower than 17.5 per cent achieved by Ennore at 12.21 mn t. New Mangalore posted 11.52 per cent at 27 mn t and Mumbai 9.63 per cent at 44 mn t.

Other ports posted negligible growth – Paradip 0.61 per cent at 40.75 mn t; VO Chidambarnar 0.47 per cent at 20.9 mn t and Kochi 0.14 per cent at 14.89 mn t.
