Cargo volume at Gangavaram port rose 40 per cent to 4.2 million tonne in Apr-Jun 2013 compared to 3 million tonne in the year-ago period.

Over 85 per cent of the cargo handled by the port is coal, while the remaining were limestone, timber, fertilisers and other items, reports indicate.

During 2013-14, the port expects to handle over 15 million tonne cargo compared to 13.09 million tonne in the previous year.

During the June 2013 quarter, Kakinada deepwater port
handled 30 per cent more cargo at 3.5 million tonne from the year-ago period.

In 2012-13, the port handled 12.07 million tonne of cargo and is set to touch the 14-million tonne mark this year.

Kakinada port expects its planned coal-mechanisation project to be ready by August-end. With this, the port’s coal handling capacity would be enhanced to 8 million tonne a year.

Though Gangavaram and Kakinada ports are being operated by private companies, the state government has some equity holding in them.
