Assocham sees huge potential for shipbuilding biz

Industry body in India, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has expected a huge potential for ship repairing and shipbuilding business in the country. According to Assocham, more than 20-year-old ships require periodic and extensive repair and maintenance and, in India, of the total 1,122 vessels in the fleet, over 41 per cent are over 20 years old and need regular attention.

The Union Minister of State for Shipping Milind Murali Deora has said in Thiruvananthapuram recently that there is a strong case for granting cabotage exemption for Vizhinjam port. The demand for exemption requested by the Kerala government is justifiable, however the views of Indian National Ship Owners Association and other stakeholders will have to be taken into consideration, he added.

The port has got Rs 8.5 crore from the Union government for development of a cruise tourism facilitation centre. High demand for Indian wheat abroad is going to benefit the Cochin Port Trust, which is said to be struggling due to the slowdown. The Union government has proposed to enhance export of wheat and for this the Cochin Port is going to be utilised. South Korea, Bangladesh and Ethiopia are the major buyers of Indian wheat, Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies KV Thomas said recently.
