Unctad report on maritime transport says that ships have become bigger, and the number of companies in most markets has diminished over the last 10 years. The report stated that on an average, the number of companies whose ships sail into each country has decreased by 27 per cent during the last 10 years from 22 in 2004 to just 16 in 2013.

Work hits at ore-handling complex in Vizag port
As workers went on a strike, work in the iron ore-handling complex (OHC) at Visakhapatnam port was paralysed last week. The workers were protesting against the privatisation of OHC even though a petition was pending in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Cochin Shipyard commissions fast patrol vessel
Cochin Shipyard-built Aadesh vessel, the first of the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard, was commissioned in Kochi last week. For handling iron ore at Visakhapatnam Port, the Union government has accorded approval for implementation of the project, upgradation of the existing facility at outer harbour and creation of new facility at inner harbor.

Larsen & Toubro's subsidiary, L&T Shipbuilding on December 12 said it has received a repeat order for six specialised commercial vessels valued at USD154 million (INR943 crore), from a Qatar-based firm.
